EVA HEINEMANN REVIEWS IN THE RING Presented by DifFRactions Theatre Dream Up Festival Written by Leonore Confino English translation by Perrine Moran Directed by Alexandre Oppecini In The Ring as part of the Dream Up Festival at Theater for the New City are a series of unresolved little scenes of various relationships between a man (Kyle Tuck) and a woman (Nathalie Nathalie Bryant) who both go by the name of Jo. What sets it up is Adam and Eve, the very first relationship, and Eves concern those future generations will degenerate because her children will have to procreate with each other, generation after generation. The scenes are cleverly encased in a white cloth ring encompassing the stage with just 2 white benches that can turn into beds, tubs, high bar tables and a great many other things to show where the next scene is taking place so no expositions are needed were inventively designed by Lytza and Mark. Alexandre Oppecini directs the scenes with smooth transitions and quick costume changes created by Sarah Thea Swafford to keep the story moving (Sometimes literally). Leonore Confino is an interesting writer and I was surprised she was a woman as the females didn’t come off to sympathetically at times. To make a better finishing touch I felt it needed to go back to Adam and Eve to make it full circle just like the metaphor of In The Ring. There was a slight translator feel to this (which it was) which made me feel like I was watching a foreign movie. This gave it a more exotic quality to the whole boy meets girl, loses girl, gets back girl. This is perfect for people with short attention spans. What helps enormously is the fine acting between Kyle Tuck and Nathalie Bryant.
