In Will Bernard’s foursome gives us a tour of the black gleaming streets and smoke-filled backrooms of a forgotten age; amply illustrated by Bernard’s loose phrasing, John Ellis’ breezy brass, Brian Charette’s buoyantly hypnotic organ, all kept straight with Rudy Royston’s spare, languid syncopation. This is Jazz you can feel in your spine; the kind of music that moves you without the need for voluminous Cliff Notes or a beret clad interpreter. Most songs are originals, but Bernard sneaks in a funky clean version of Led Zeppelin’s Dancing Days—and that my friend in itself is worth the price of this smoldering gem of an album. Get your Fedora on.
