In a 1989 JASA article the mathematician and magician Persi Diaconis, along with Frederick Mosteller, coined the the law of truly large numbers, which says that when enormous numbers of events cumulate over time, almost any outrageous thing is likely to happen. Perhaps the law of truly large numbers applies to the last line of this Douglas Adams quotation (from the Restaurant at the End of the Universe): There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened. stat.ucla.edu/~cocteau/coincidence.pdf
