In a Newsmakers interview, Republican Rep. Dave Craig outlined possible changes to the secret John Doe process that allows prosecutors to compel witness testimony and produce documents. Craig said those changes include allowing John Doe probes to be authorized by judges for only “serious” crimes, limiting the time they are authorized, requiring other judges to approve any extension of that time limit and requiring the cost of John Doe probes to be made public. Craig said Gov. Scott Walker, who was the focus of two John Doe probes before his Nov. 4 re-election, had not asked him to change John Doe laws that date from the 19th century.
