In a comedy of sorts, Chennai corporation wants to punish contractors for laying sub-standard roads, and have identified nine contractors who had laid roads which were washed away, resulting in potholes and craters. But it is common knowledge that every contractor has to pay a substantial cut to the ruling party goonda system (read: ministers, MLAs, councillors and officials most likely going all the way to the very top). I was told by one person in the know that the commission could run up to 30% of the contract value. How can you then lay a good road? The only hope for us in Chennai is when we get an incorruptible Mayor, Councillors and officials running our Corporation. The current dispensation (AIADMK) or the earlier one (DMK) cannot deliver us the quality of life we want in the city.
