In a courtroom crowded with supporters, Queensland woman Sally Kuether was released on bail earlier this year. A librarian, she had been arrested and held in custody for six days under the state’s notorious Vicious Lawless Association Disestablishment Act, or VLAD Act. Her alleged crime? Meeting her partner and a friend – two alleged members of the Life and Death motorcycle club – at the Dayboro hotel on December 19. As Kuether prepares her case she will grapple with a wall of secrecy. Secret evidence, once unheard of, is now increasingly common in Australian courts. It is a fixture of the anti-bikie laws across the country.
