In a defensive and almost aggressive justification to re-institute trophy hunting in Zambia, the Ministry of Tourism and Arts published this message: zambiatourism/zawa-explains-hunting-ban-lift#comment-1248 Zambians are intelligent people and will see this for what it is – a desperation measure to attempt to justify a highly unpopular measure among the Zambian people. I especially like this line: “f you don’t want any animals to be hunted or culled for conservation purposes, then the only option is to leave them alone entirely and find some other planet to live on.” So Zambians who are opposed to selling their increasingly threatened wildlife to foreign trophy hunters should emigrate to Mars? Zambians have never profited from trophy hunting. Those funds end up in the pockets of the hunting operators and elites. All that Zambians have seen with trophy hunting is fewer and fewer wild animals that should be their national heritage. There might now only be 230 lions left in Zambia for example. It is high time the Ministry of Tourism and Arts diversifies the income of the Zambian Wildlife Authority away from trophy hunting and hunting concession leases. Insisting against common sense that trophy hunting will conserve Zambia’s wildlife will not be popular with Zambia’s citizens.
