In a given war, and there are always plenty around, the role of each antagonist is to make sure to paint the actions of his adversary as barbaric and unjustified. For the intellectual, the role is to intimate to the public which one is indeed so by the values of one or several of the antagonists, and which ones are simply acceptable tit-for-tat in the value-systems of this or that party. A true intellectual cannot rely on the dream of world shared ideals, even if the prospect of that is exciting... but within and outside the spaces of the shared exist various layers of agreement, especially when societies are pushed to define their values. There will always remain of course the key areas of difference, even if all societies and cultures converge on the use of pure rationality. The problem lies not in rationality as an operation, but rationality as a cosmic view, and no no rationality could be conceived without a priori moral conception. Rational in human life cannot be isolated from notions of justice, of evaluation of greater vs. lesser evil, from mathmatical logic
