In a good number of left wing/progressive websites/blogs/ etc., the folks in the Republican party, Congressional Republicans, the folks of Fox News, etc are constantly accused of idiocy and/or stupidity after they make statements of various sorts. The law of averages being what they are, there are certainly plenty of stupid people out there, but I believe we should think more carefully about this. People in Congress are typically people with law degrees, and typically such people are not idiots. Announcers on Fox news are highly-paid professionals, who did not get to the positions they are in by being below average in intelligence. We all must remember that the the things they say in public are for the consumption of others. They are saying the things they say to sway peoples minds, to mold the audiences opinions. Propaganda is typically not aimed at intellect. As such, and particularly given the level of education and sophistication of the target audiences (typically not thee or me) the things they say may seem ridiculous. Our opinion doesnt matter. What matters is that the people who hear and BELIEVE those statements gives money, time, or political support, or at least accepts and adopts demonization of whoever is being targeted by the statements. The goal at the very least is to prevent the listeners from perceiving what is being done to the populace by the politicians, the various powerful industry groups, and the big money that funds election campaigns, think tanks, and various media outlets. To say these people are stupid discounts their effectiveness, power, and goals. Look behind the curtain, follow the money. Dont just call them stupid, because they are not. (With a few glaring exceptions that prove the point.) (Im feeling serious)
