In a landmark ruling last week, the US Court of Appeals for the First Circuit in Boston ruled that the state of Massachusetts must provide a gender reassignment surgery for a transgender prisoner, after finding that the surgery is the only adequate care for her gender identity disorder. Mazzoni Center was among several LGBT legal and civil rights organizations to file an amicus brief in the case. “While some might consider this to be a controversial decision, we believe it was rightly decided,” Mazzoni Legal Director David Rosenblum said, adding that “as the circuit court ruling states: ‘Courts must not shrink from their obligation to enforce the constitutional rights of all persons, including prisoners,’ and those rights include medically necessary treatment.” More info at: b.globe/1eKPzr8
