In a little more than a week, about 150,000 undocumented Californians have applied for drivers licenses and about 13,000 licenses have been issued so far. Thousands more to go. As I told San Francisco Chronicle, its not only undocumented immigrants like who are impacted. Our families, friends and loved ones--the people who worry about us when we get behind the wheel--are greatly impacted, too: Vargas said one of the first things he did after getting his license was pick up his grandmother, who used to become so nervous when he drove without a license that he would play Frank Sinatra to calm her. After taking her to the mall and showing her his license, he said he told her, “It’s going to be OK.” “I can only imagine what kind of conversations like that are happening all across the state with our grandmothers, our parents, our uncles, our children...
