In a one-sentence statement issued at 4:34 p.m. Thursday, Republican Gov. Scott Walker asked that the Legislature next year repeal Common Core educational standards being phased in across Wisconsin and the nation. Tony Evers, state superintendent of public instruction, had Wisconsin adopt Common Core standards in 2010. Today, Evers issued this statement in response to the governors call to repeal those standards: “Wisconsin’s Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts and Mathematics set a higher bar for what students should know and be able to do to succeed in college and the workplace. … Our educators indisputably agree these standards are more rigorous than our previous standards and still provide districts with the ability to select a local curriculum that fits their needs. … It’s time to keep politics out of the classroom and remain focused on what’s most important — delivering a college and career ready education to Wisconsin’s students.”
