In a quick check on vrbo and airbnb, Im seeing 4K units listed in the greater L.A. area. While these probably overlap somewhat, this doesnt include listings on smaller sites. L.A. has an average rent for a *one-bedroom* coming in at nearly $1500 (if anyone still thinks housing should be 1/3 of your income, that would mean an annual income of close to $55K for that 1-bed). Displaced homeowners are jamming the rental market (and inflating prices) through no fault of their own. An estimated 25,000-30,000 people are homeless within the city boundaries, more than double that across the county. Lets add to this Bernard Parks silly and onerous notion to shift the capital investment in seismic retrofitting from the building owners (who would gain the higher value of the building) to renters (who already pay half). An eyeball typical price of one of these tourist places is about $100/night, or $3K a month. So I get the profit motive. Wheres the human motive to control this?
