In a recent Skeptics Collection blog post, I said that the only doctrine of Christianity I still believed in was the doctrine of Original Sin. (BTW I intended this only metaphorically / analogically.) Now I realize that is not true. There is a 2nd Christian doctrine I realize I believe in ... this time in a pretty much literal sense: the Communion of the Saints. My Big Island in-law family -- mostly Buddhists, a few Christians, and several Nones -- threw a happy-65th-bday party for me last night. There was Chinese food, Mexican food (because Jan made her patented hyper-margaritas ... which are real-life versions of Douglas Adams Pan-Galactic Gargle Blasters from Hitchhiker), apple pie, German chocolate cake, lilikoi cookies, 4 kinds of ice cream ... but mostly infinite amounts of love, fun, jokes, laughter, and exuberant / boisterous celebration. The only sour note was that, as we were eating dessert, we watched Cal Poly beat the Univ of Hawaii 4-3 in intercollegiate baseball. The Communion of the Saints is QUITE REAL.
