In a recent interview, TJ and I were asked about our roles as advocates for kindness and compassion towards cats and other animals. We both agreed that we gladly claim this role, and I further explained that the primary intent of the videos is for entertainment, but I also like how they demonstrate male characters showing affection towards animals. In that same spirit I also enjoy presenting myself as an advocate for other members of our society who suffer inequality. Over the last few years I’ve supported the movement for LGBT equality, and now I would like to declare that I support women’s rights and that I am a feminist. To get a full understanding of what I mean by this please watch this wonderful speech by a poised, somewhat nervous, and remarkably eloquent Emma Watson. During the latter part of the speech she talks about how gender stereotypes are harmful to both men and women, and I believe this is true. I have been criticized for being “less of a man” because I demonstrate kindness towards animals. This criticism always comes from other men who feel the pressure to live up to traditional “manly” stereotypes, and clearly suffer the insecurity of wondering if they do. And yet I also play to certain gender stereotypes. My videos often portray an uncomfortable interaction between a woman and the shy engineer (or other) male characters. Again my intent is for humor, but in reality men and women often don’t understand each other. Perhaps feminism would bring greater understanding so that the lady would not feel so uncomfortable around the engineers, and the engineers wouldn’t be so mystified by the lady. I believe that the women’s rights movement has made great advances but there is still much to be done. I am encouraged to see more and more women in my own career field, and at work I now enjoy the company of two lady colleagues who are sharp, capable, and hard-working engineers, as well as my current and previous engineering managers. Even so we are still shy of women in many roles in society and this needs to change. youtube/watch?v=pTG1zcEJmxY
