In a recent round of secretarial recruitment ads, we made it a point to say that candidates over 50 could apply as we value their experience and expertise. We received a flood of applications from more mature candidates, some of whom told us horror stories about how headhunters and HR managers turned them away purely on the basis of their being over 35, often telling them that MNCs have a policy of not wanting anyone above a certain age, irrespective of ability. Shame on you, Singapore. By 2030, one third of Singaporeans will be over 65. I hope the decision makers behind these arbitrary ageist policies find themselves peddling their CVs then.
