In a school district where students speak more than 70 different languages, the need for oral language interpreters is ever present. The Olathe School District needs bilingual individuals who speak Somali, Korean, Vietnamese and Dinka for occasional interpreter work. Language Management Specialist Rocio Montenegro said the interpreters would be contacted as needed both for daytime and evening oral translations. These situations might include parent-teacher conferences, preschool screenings, phone calls, home visits, translating documents, and Individualized Education Program meetings. The salary is $12.50 per hours with a two-hour minimum. Interested applicants must have a high school diploma, be at least 18 years old, and have a flexible schedule. Requests for language interpreters are made three to five days in advance so that interpreters can adjust their schedule as needed. Anyone interested in serving as an oral language interpreter in the Olathe Public Schools should email [email protected].
