In a show of unity, two rival members of parliament (MP) spearheaded the handing out of books, bags, pencils, and other material by Palmyra Foundation (out of Montego Bay, St James) to students at Port Antonio Basic School in Portland. The handover was witnessed by Frank Perolli, board member of Palmyra Foundation, who spoke about the Foundations role in assisting more than 6,000 students with work books, pencils, and other resource materials. We are well aware of the importance of education, commented Perolli. He added, This particular function is somewhat historic, as the need is great at this school. We are happy to be in Portland, as we could have chosen another school in another parish, but based on the request and recommendation, this school is a beneficiary. It also showcases a sense of unity among the MPs, Daryl Vaz and Linvale Bloomfield, as despite the political rivalry, they are at peace. According to Perolli, approximately US$40,000 is being spent to ensure that schools across the country benefit from books and other material, and with assistance from Food For The Poor, the Foundation will continue to honour its mandate of providing reading books, work books, bags, pencils, and crayons to schools. Both MPs, Vaz from West Portland and Bloomfield from East Portland, have agreed that there is a need to ensure that educational material are made available to the young, who will be able to read and understand at a tender age, thus making it easier for them during their primary school years. Acting principal Jennifer Buchanan expressed thanks for the donation, which she believes will go a far way in helping the youngsters to identify letters, make letter sounds, and to form words. This is the fourth of such donations by Palmyra Foundation, said Buchanan. She added, They (students) enjoy working in books as it is very simple. Instructions are simple and what is being taught in class is reinforced in these books. The books comprise numeracy, phonics, literacy, forming letters, identification of common and capital letters, and number and numeral association. The school has a student population of 151 with ages ranging from three years to six years.
