In a state that cant pay salaries and pensions on time to many of its employees, it is sad to see legislators coming together to approve increases in their own benefits with retrospective effect from 2009. As it is, our state legislature functions for an extremely limited amount of time in any given year. Yet our legislarors gave themselves an increase. They should consider appointing an independent commission that can look into appropriate remuneration of MLAs and MLCs. Otherwise this creates a serious conflict of interest. Reforms must start with our politicians. Otherwise they should not expect the common man to believe in a civilised, progressive, rules-based society. I am certain people will make pensioners out of many sitting MLAs.
