In a study of more than 44,500 men and women who were followed for about 12 years, vegetarians had 1/3 lower risk for heart disease than people who ate meat and fish. The lowered risk was mostly attributed to vegetarians’ lower blood pressure and better cholesterol levels, both of which play a role in heart and blood vessel health.
