In a welcome diversion from the drumbeat of war, the Today programme this morning bade farewell to Evan Davis, off to provide a much needed shot in the arm for post-paxo Newsnight. The clips compilation below at 2hr 53 mins (the very end of the programme) is a hilarious exchange between newsroom luvvies - For goodness sake, this programmes such a shambles sometimes - but as I drove to work it reminded me that Today is one of the pillars of Britishness, (interviews from the Dalai Lama to Jay-Z) a journalistic beacon providing both light and heat. Its a shame Evans been demoted to mere telly again. He has a great face for radio, probably why he skulks in the dungeon below the preening Dragons. But if Evan Almighty can bring a bit of Todays range, depth and pace to Newsnight, then the BBC News day will have a stronger bookend.
