In a word, the struggle to re-frame and re-equilibrate collective - TopicsExpress

In a word, the struggle to re-frame and re-equilibrate collective judgment about the relative political and moral merits of the founding fathers of the 1978 Constitution matters for defining the limits of the politically possible. Were the founding fathers responsible, pragmatic heroes, willing to overcome longstanding ideological rigidities of leaders on both left and right and valiantly come to commonly embrace basic civil rights and a competitive democratic representative arena as substantive ends worthy of defence above all else? Or rather, were the founding fathers divided between a right thoroughly compromised by its fascist roots, and a left traumatized, quiescent, divided, even slavishly-conditioned by forty years of living in fear? In moments of what Gramsci termed “organic crisis,” long dominant myths can very quickly come to be questioned and even overturned. Like in the Wizard of Oz, when the curtain is finally pulled back, and the great and powerful wizard turns out to be a frail and pathetic little old man.
