In a world that is increasingly mourning the decline of the reading habit in children, the Hyderabad-based BREAD Society is changing the way little minds are shaped in India’s government schools. Strong proponents of encouraging kids to read, they believe that children who are exposed to libraries grow up to lead holistic and well-rounded lives and become more responsible citizens. They, thus, fund children’s libraries in government schools across Andhra Pradesh. Libraries in government schools do have books, but these were found to be lying in locked cupboards. Library teachers are expected to account for these books at the time of their transfer or retirement, and since they must pay for missing books, they do not even risk lending books to students, in fear that they might lose them. The Society takes steps to ensure that the library is actually being utilized - from mandatory library periods in schools to putting students in charge of the library themselves! ngos.giveindia.org/children/spreading-joy-reading-among-first-generation-learners/
