In a year like no other from Les Mirerables to Abba! In a year - TopicsExpress

In a year like no other from Les Mirerables to Abba! In a year like no other is a phrase that we have heard often in 2014. And at the Border Club Hawick we are delighted to say that 2014, for us, was also ‘a year like no other’ for all the right reasons. Whilst Scotland has hosted many international and high profile events, the Border Club too has done it’s share of hosting events with musicians from around the World. Last night cumulated in a very successful year for the club when the superb cast of Hawick Opera delighted our audience with their annual ‘Opera Sings Christmas and Songs from the shows’ concert. Swaying and clapping From the Black Hills of Dakota to France and the highly powerful and fantastically sung Les Miserables, which had many in the audience in tears, so poignant was the performances given. The Cast of Hawick Opera sung well known and loved songs from all of the top shows and had the audience eating from their hand – swaying, singing, clapping and thoroughly enjoying a perfect performance. Sounds Teesh At this point we should give a mention to Paul Templeman and David Finnie who once again were responsible for the sound and PA. Their experience and high end kit gave the listeners in the club a first class audio experience – something that was noted by many on the night. Many thanks to both. A night of three halves The night was one of three halves! And only in the Border Club can this be done! This allows both cast and audience to ‘dry their eyes’ and of course refresh their drinks. Passion, expertise, emotion and humour Without singling any one of the Hawick Opera cast out, it is fair to say that this assembled group of enthusiasts were obviously having a great time. Singing with great passion, expertise, emotion and at times with humour! In fact quite a lot of humour. It was easily seen that the cast were having as much fun as the audience. Moving through the evening into the third half, the annual Border Club raffle was drawn with winners both in the hall and around the Borders. Scott Killey ably assisted by six year old Lucy-Marie form Earlston made a number of people very happy by selecting their winning tickets. Jingly bells As the evening neared the end the cast moved into their Christmas repertoire and certainly had those sleigh bells jingling with a festive interlude of festive fun. Joined in the final few numbers by visiting six year old Lucy-Marie the club was into full Christmas swing as the curtain, metaphorically, came down on the evening and the final song ‘We Wish You A Merry Christmas’ was sung with Christmas spirit and joined in by the very responsive audience. Thank you Social Convenor Cammy Reith ended the evening with a vote of thanks to the talented cast of Hawick Opera and their musical director, Derek Calder, who does a sterling job of producing the scores for all the Hawick Opera shows and of course tonight’s event. Thanks also went to our Bar Manageress, Tracey Grieve, who is leaving the club after working for us since the club opened 124 years ago! Well maybe, not quite that long but for many many years. Abba And finally, If this report has made you wish you had be there, the next Hawick Opera sings event will be one not to miss – Social committee member Scott Killey along with honorary club member, Sir Chay Blyth, have suggested that the next musical extravaganza, from Hawick Opera in the club is ….. ‘Hawick Opera sings Abba’! Watch this space. Have a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year from the Committee and Staff of the Border Club Hawick.
