In addition to the stereotypes created by ISIS, Boku Haram and their ilk, we often create our own stereotypes. A student in my Islam class yesterday asked me why the Muslim women in her neighborhood never respond to her greeting and the men dump garbage in front of her house. I didnt have a good answer. She also wondered why the Muslim guys in our class always sat next to each other and talked in class. I told her that unfortunately Muslim students are often the worst students as they dont take the class very seriously. In addition to responding to and complaining about the media, we need to remember that people are watching us and we cant blame the media for the negative perceptions we ourselves often create.
