In advance of early voting I thought it would be helpful to give my perspective on the three constitutional amendments that will be on the ballot. Amendment A prohibits an increase in the state maximum income tax rate in effect as of January 1, 2015 (6 percent). North Carolina just lowered its rate to 5.75 percent. Many of us would like to see Georgia reduce or eliminate its income tax. Vote Yes and future legislatures can’t increase this maximum. Amendment B adds reckless driving penalties or fees to the brain and spinal injury trust fund. DUI fees already go to this fund. If this passes and someone gets a DUI reduced to reckless driving, then this money will also go to the brain and spinal injury trust fund. Vote Yes. Amendment C exempts private businesses that build or operate student housing or a student parking deck from property taxes. The owners would just pass the tax on to the students and this is an effort to hold down costs. Vote Yes. I understand the language of the constitutional amendments leaves much to be desired and I hope this clarifies the questions for you. This week I will be reading to the Pre-K class at Kingsley Elementary. Celebrating Georgia Pre-K week is always a great experience. As you know, Voices For Georgia’s Children and First Lady Sandra Deal are the driving force behind this initiative. Senator Fran Millar senatorfran.millar 770-490-0213
