In an Australian first, Victorias newly-elected Labor government - TopicsExpress

In an Australian first, Victorias newly-elected Labor government will end the sale of dogs and cats in pet shops — only allowing stores to facilitate adoptions through rescue groups! This is huge. In fact Id say this is one of the most significant advances weve seen in companion animal welfare in recent times. Pet shops are often used by puppy farmers as a front for their cruel businesses. They encourage impulse buying, which sees countless dogs and cats ending up in shelters each year and thousands killed simply because there arent enough homes to go around. Pet shops and online trading sites fuel the lucrative puppy factory industry. The fact that at least one of these avenues will no longer be available to unscrupulous breeders in Victoria is something for us all to celebrate. This landmark achievement comes off the back of lobbying efforts by Animals Australia and our colleague groups Oscars Law and RSPCA Victoria, and was aided by the voices of tens of thousands of individuals who have relentlessly petitioned their MPs. If you were among them, this is your victory, too! Susan, were determined to ensure this good news for dogs and cats doesnt end with Victoria. This precedent creates a powerful platform to launch our new national campaign calling on animal lovers everywhere to help end the cruelty of puppy factories. Thanks to the generosity of thousands of Animals Australia supporters, we are putting the finishing touches on this exciting initiative that will hit TV screens in the New Year. As the privileged guardian of two rescued border collies, I know how lucky I am to wake up each day to the unconditional love, loyalty and companionship of a dog. Which makes their exploitation in puppy factories all the more deplorable. I also know that the key to shutting down these establishments is as simple as caring Australians understanding the magnitude of the problem — and the power they wield to fix it. We have some gorgeous ambassadors of the two and four legged kind wholl be helping us do just that, and we cant wait to introduce you to them soon :) For the animals, Lyn White Campaign Director Animals Australia
