In an act of top music geekery, close comrade Stephen Deuters suggested that a bunch of us share the albums of our lifetime; the best LP from each year we have been alive. Heres mine, get stuck in: 1976 Songs In The Key Of Life - Stevie Wonder If I were to be born earlier, you’d be seeing more of his work. Didn’t get into him until I was 18 but this double album is dense with quality. 1977 Rumours - Fleetwood Mac 1978 Comes A Time - Neil Young A quiet year but this is one of Young’s greatly under appreciated albums in his folk mode. 1979 Entertainment! - Gang of Four What a year! This was so hard to decide upon but Entertainment! is perfect but nods to Off The Wall by MJ and Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division 1980 Closer - Joy Division 1981 Damaged - Black Flag This album saved my life in 1994 and is my favourite LP of all time. Bar none. 1982 Walk Among Us - The Misfits Yes, I know Thriller by Michael Jackson came out that year but this is the only perfect Misfits record and I’m a punk rocker. 1983 Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes Nearly a dead heat with Murmur by REM but have more personal affection for this Violent Femmes record, as I used to play bongos in a Femmes covers band…Honestly. 1984 Hatful of Hollow - The Smiths & My War - Black Flag Do not ask me to choose between these two or I will kill you. 1985 New Day Rising - Husker Du 1986 The Queen is Dead - The Smiths & Whose Got The 10 1/2? - Black Flag See 1984 for explanation. I just wish these two favourite bands of mine would stop releasing albums in the same year. 1987 Yo! Bum Rush The Show - Public Enemy An immense year with great albums by MJ, The Smiths, REM and Husker Du but this blew my 11 year old mind to smithereens and I’ve never recovered. The beginning of my love affair with music of black origin. 1988 Straight Outta Compton - NWA 1989 Complete Discography - Minor Threat & The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses Again, impossible to pick between these two, I mean, if I had to, Minor Threat would edge it for the song ‘In My Eyes’ alone, although having said that, The Stone Roses has Waterfall…ARGGGGHHHH! 1990 Repeater - Fugazi This was a genuine surprise when compiling the list but damn, this album made me want to be a good human and Fear Of A Black Planet by Public Enemy is excellent but it’s too sprawling. This LP is a punch to the solar plexus. 1991 Nevermind - Nirvana 1992 Rage Against The Machine - Rage Against The Machine & It’s A Shame About Ray - The Lemonheads Perfect example of the ying and yang of my 16th year as a human, could not separate these two even if you threatened to kill me. You’d have to kill me. 1993 In Utero - Nirvana 1994 Grace - Jeff Buckley Re-discovered this classic this year. Sublime but Built To Spill’s There’s Nothing Wrong With Love is a top listen from this year also. Try it. 1995 Ben Fold’s Five - Ben Fold’s Five Hoping this is the year me and Victor bond and play fuzz bass over Elton John piano parts. 1996 Odelay - Beck Loved it so much an ex-girlfriend made me a massive collage using imagery from the album and it’s still in my parent’s loft. Heh. Devil’s haircut anyone? 1997 OK Computer - Radiohead But Either/Or by Elliott Smith MUST BE ACKNOWLEDGED AS A WORK OF GENIUS! 1998 XO - Elliott Smith 1999 Keep It Like A Secret - Built to Spill An obscure surprise. I got into Built To Spill thanks to Ben Fold’s Five and funnily enough this just pips their final LP together. 2000 Kid A - Radiohead If you’d have asked me at the time I’d have said Coldplay’s debut Parachutes but I’m too cool for that now… 2001 Is This it? - The Strokes 2002 Original Pirate Material - The Streets I first heard this at a house party and it immediately changed my world and got me to re-connect with my dance music roots. 2003 Deloused At The Comatorium - The Mars Volta A deeply spiritual experience for me. 2004 A Grand Don’t Come For Free - The Streets The best concept album EVER. 2005 I’m Wide Awake It’s Morning - Bright Eyes Again, just re-discovered this nearly perfect work of art. 2006 Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not - The Arctic Monkeys 2007 In Rainbows - Radiohead Just pips For Emma, Forever Ago by Bon Iver because In Rainbows doesn’t make me cry, it makes me want to spaz out and be the future. 2008 Glasvegas - Glasvegas Looking back this was a shocking year for music. This record however is deeply personal favourite of mine. 2009 After Robots - BLK JKS I wish these guys would make some more music, I miss them. 2010 Streets Of Our Time - Danny & The Champions Of The World No, not My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy by Kanye West because this year is one of those deeply personal , irrational choices full of love. 2011 Go Tell Fire To The Mountain - Wu Lyf 2012 Attack On Memory - Cloud Nothings 2013 Yeezus - Kanye West
