In an earlier post here, we wondered if Saturdays big Holy War showdown between Holy Spirit and St. Augustine Prep would live up to the hype. The answer: It did. St. Augustine won a thriller, 55-52, in front of a loud and raucous crowd packed to the rafters and the emergency exits of Spirits cozy 50-year-old gym. The Preps brilliant one-two punch of sophomore sensation Justyn Mutts and fearless junior guard Saeed Nelson proved too much for the Spartans. Mutts powered his way to a game-high 24 points, and Nelson slashed and dashed for 21 as the Hermits (13-1) won their eighth straight game. Jordan Taylor did everything he could to keep the Spartans in the game, scoring 20 points. Holy Spirit had several chances to tie the game with less than two minutes to play, but shots by C.J. Barnes and Tyler Jones rimmed in and out, and John Middletons 3-point attempt at the buzzer was just off the mark as the Spartans fell to 9-3. The game was a complete sellout, with many people turned away at the doors. Some of the unfortunate tried to watch the game from outside, faces pressed against the fogged-up glass doors at one end of the court. Well have much more on this game coming up at sports.shorenewstoday.
