In an email, Treacy Colbert reminded me of something that was not unusual for our generation -- the rabbits foot for good luck. Im talking an actual paw, usually dyed in bright colors, and hung on a key chain. Crazy, when you think about it now. Got my brain working. Whats else for your generation was commonplace then but completely absurd or even taboo now? I did think of two other things, both related to food . . . Cooked liver and onions (sometimes with bacon, too). What the heck was with that? It tasted awful but was supposed to be good for us. Yeah, right. Generous use of monosodium glutamate in our home-cooked meals (in Japanese households, the red can of Ajinomoto). I know its still used in processed foods, but Ajinomoto was a staple in the household. I guess its also sold as Alive! or something like that. So how about you? Can you think of anything that we used to do but would definitely not do today? (And leave technology out -- we couldnt help but use the mimeograph machine, there werent many other options back then.)
