In another Jax news post.... my comment was... Forrest High to become Bulls Eye High but the sign reads WESTSIDE. This need not have been a racial issue, but he activists made it so. No cute story will make this any easier. The cute mascot and pretty new letters on the school dont tell the real story. Thousands of Forrest Alumni are upset that the schools name has changed. Well get over it. The bridge between the Forrest Alumni and their Alma Mater has been destroyed by this school board. Well get over it. There are activists and activist organizations that pushed so hard to change the name; they repeated one side of a debate so often that too many others came to believe their words as truth (other scholars have evidence to the contrary). The debate about Gen Forrest should be left to the legitimate historians. The school board and activists say the name change will be a step toward healing (their own damages werent really addressed) . Good Luck with that. Meanwhile, well get over it. I am sorry there are people so hurt or damaged that even now they act like their lives will be better if the name is gone. It is indeed a disgrace that Jacksonville has city leaders and school system leaders that would rather disrespect thousands of NBF alumni, who are now tax payers, because it is the focus of some negative mail-in campaign rather than seek to highlight the successes of a school that existed for 55 years. School boards for 54 years supported Forrest High and gave praise to its achievements. Only one school board, just one, in 2013, placed themselves above all the other boards to erase the Alma Mater of over 30,000 Forrest Alumni. The broken trust between the school board and the public has yet to be addressed. This school might still be referred to as Bulls Eye High because of all the interest generated to find if the tax dollars spent to change the name will have any positive effect. A growing number of Jax citizens have come to know that Vitti to be the worst superintendent in 55 years, or ever. It will be his legacy.
