In anticipication of that lecture Nelly will be giving on Bellini in the Divas & Masterclasses series June 19 ... another beautiful review/impression by our Christophe Ichabod Vetter about her Beatrice di Tenda in 2007. Sunday evening (18 March) with a full house, the very special soprano Nelly Miricioiu sang her 7th opera with the Chelsea Opera. As soon as she opened her mouth and gave the first notes, I knew her performance would be one of her best. The role of Beatrice is long and taxing but a perfect showcase to prove how this exceptional soprano can give a big lesson to singers about romantic bel canto. The voice sounds fresh and free, the long bellinian phrases were shaped with a marvellous legato capacibility. And the coloratura was brillant and exciting, the ornementation always in good taste. The top notes were fearless (high Cs! and high Ds!!). Besides, Miricioiu found in her voice a new quality which allows her to perfect attacks on the notes and more steele while still capable of the most wonderful piani and pianissimi. As for her acting, she was very moving, her body mouvement replacing easealy the fact that it was a concert version; the sublime final scene found her acting with dignity and abandon. What a pity this repertoire doesnt seem to interest producers and that no theaters have the courage to produce on the stage Bellini, Donizetti, Mercadante...With singers like Nelly Miricioiu, that would be a fantastic musical and theatrical experience! The conductor was the excellent Brad Cohen who seems to enjoy working with Miricioiu and the supporting cast was good but not exceptionnal. I liked Anne Masons timbre and musicality though but Stephen Gadd wasnt in the required style. So it was really Nelly Miricioius evening and an evening to remember! newsgroups.derkeiler/Archive/Rec/rec.music.opera/2007-03/msg01270.html
