In any relationship, be it love between boyfriend and girlfriend, in marriage, at work and general friendship, when the other person feels the need to justify being in that relationship even without being asked to do so, the relationship is no longer solid. It becomes a managed relationship and once it reaches those levels, it becomes fictitious and based on assessment of gains and losses. When we base our relationships with others on earthly gains, we lose the point or miss the mark. Sadly, we even lose sense of self as we want to blend with the situations we find ourselves in. We become chameleons that are quick to blend with the environment. We end up laughing to stupidity and making mockery of ourselves, clap hands to statements that bear no common ground just to be counted among a certain group, faction or sector and only to regret later. Kebby Maphatsoe made a very serious statement against public protector, Advocate Thuli Madontsela only to later withdraw. This is what he had to say for the benefit of those who may have missed it. “We can’t allow people to hijack the ANC. We’ll fight and defend the African National Congress. UThuli umele asitshele ukuthi ubani ihandler yakhe (Thuli must tell us who her handler is),” Maphatsoe said. He was addressing hundreds of people who attended the tombstone unveiling of former Umkhonto we Sizwe combatant Linda “Lion of Chiawelo” Jabane in Soweto on Saturday. The crowd applauded at the accusation. This is what the Deputy Minister of Defence had to say later, After consultation with my organisation, the African National congress, it would seem as though my statements have been misunderstood or misinterpreted. I therefore withdraw those statements and apologise for any offences and hurt that would have been caused. Although Deputy Minister Maphatsoe may have apologised, this statement has far reaching effect in the person of Advocate Madontsela. To be labeled a foreign agent, it means you are working with foreign agencies that may intend to infiltrate the country or undermine its intelligence and make the country prone to attack. That makes one, Enemy of the state. This is a very serious charge any entity or person could make on an individual and deputy minister should have known better. To use such a platform and wage such personal attack and fail to back it up only to provide apology and claim to have been misinterpreted or misunderstood as he alleges, shows lack of morals as people throw in whatever to put weight to defending the indefensible. Advocate Madontsela is still considering the withdrawal and it is upon herself whether or not she intends taking action out of the vitriol by the said individual. I am saddened that the president seems to be getting deeper into hot waters as people tirelessly dig into his past and it seems he will inevitably see his day in court. My concern is gravely is with these sort of individuals who will be dancing to a new tune when a new DJ is in town as they did with president Mbeki. Some even wanted president Mbeki to be put to trial for Aids denial, some wanted him to lose benefits bestowed to any out-going president for having served the nation. What they did not understand was that he did not fail the nation and that there was no vote of no confidence passed but he was recalled by fellow comrades due to a misleading court judgement which was later ruled out by a higher court. They saw him unjustifiably out because the new DJ was in town. Like President Mbeki, President Zuma will be left out in the cold as he would be out of the system, and perhaps facing his own drama with no Friends of Jacob Zuma but Foes of Jacob Zuma. President Zuma should have known that frienship by convenience has never worked and that those who supported him through out did so because it was marriage of convenience and they would support a sitting president only to be recognised for high office in cabinet and in parliament.
