In bed reading a book I bought today on kindle, Grain Brain. Neurologist and nutrition-savvy Dr. David Perlmutter speaks out about the western-modern diet of high-carb, low-fat is giving us Alzheimer, dementia, diabetes, depression, anxiety, ADHD, and that diabetes is very much related (Having diabetes doubles your risk of Alzheimers). Instead he says that a low-carb, high-fat diet is beneficial to the brain, and can help us take it back again. I totally agree. We are starving our brain while also poisoning it. It is now known that our brains manufacture its own insulin. Dr. Mercola says, Now, when your brains production of insulin decreases, your brain literally begins to starve, as its deprived of the glucose-converted energy it needs to function normally. This is what happens to Alzheimers patients -- portions of their brain start to atrophy, or starve, leading to impaired functioning and eventual loss of memory, speech, movement, and personality. In effect, your brain can begin to atrophy from starvation if it becomes insulin-resistant and loses its ability to convert glucose into energy. Thankfully, the brain can also use ketones to burn as energy instead of glucose (ketones are the fat your body burns instead of sugar for energy), and coconut oil is a major resource of that, 66%. The body has its own ketone production, but I have also learned through research that the body will stop producing it with a diet high in sugars and carbs. To get your body to kick up its own ketone production, cut our the sugars/high-carbs. (articles.mercola/sites/articles/archive/2010/12/13/can-this-natural-food-cure-or-prevent-alzheimers.aspx) A quote from the book, Our brain... weighs three pounds and has one hundred thousand miles of blood vessels. contains more connections than there are stars in the Milky Way. is the fattest organ in the body. could be suffering this very minute without you having a clue. I recommend this book, its a good read and inspirational for me about the things I can change now for a brain I want later. :)
