In case anyone thinks this is just article is just a ploy to make Obama look good politically, the article gives credit where credit is due: The reserve was created in 2009 by George W. Bush, acting under the authority of the 1906 Antiquities Act. This gives the president the right to protect the environment without approval from congress, provided there is an ecological or scientific need. At its inception, the reserve protected about 87,000 square miles. Obama used the same authority to expand it, as congress had been unable to agree on terms of environmental protection in the area. The two only political things I will say are 1. We better not hear negative stuff about Obama not getting congressional approval for this from those that supported Bush since Bush did the *exact* same thing in creating this reserve in the first place. 2. Even though I was a *huge* opponent of Bush, I am fine with admitting when he did something right--even those you vehemently disagree with are bound to do *something* you do agree with. So if you are completely unable to see a single thing Obama did right, you should really re-examine that...
