In case you ever wondered what deep & meaningful literary conversations authors have with their editors, heres a pretty fun example: Editor #3: I dont know if this is something that ANYONE else will notice, but consciously or not, you like the verb pop! Its in these 6 chapters four times, and I know its in earlier chapters as well. :) People pop in and out of bed, pop food in their mouths, jaw muscles pop, etc. Just maybe something to think about for other books. Feel free to ignore this. Me: I found pop or pops an earth-shattering 9 times in the entire manuscript. Do you think thats excessive for a 126,596 word book? The word pop makes up approximately 0.007% of the novel. How many did you find when you searched? Maybe my Advanced Word search sucks. Try searching for walks or stands or says. Then youll find out who my true favorites really are. Seriously, there just arent enough words for walk in the English language. And when people walk down a hall, there just arent a whole lot of ways to write that (unless theyre doing something worth mentioning while they walk--like juggling napalm, for example). :D
