In case you missed it: Southeastern Adds 20 for 2014 on National Signing Day HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana football team added 20 student-athletes who will continue their academic and athletic endeavors as members of the Lion football program, Southeastern head coach Ron Roberts announced on Wednesday. The newest additions included not only scholarship athletes, but preferred walk-ons as well. Combined with the 11 student-athletes who the Lions brought in at the beginning of the spring semester, Southeastern will be adding 31 student-athletes to a program that is coming off setting a single-season school record for victories, finishing 11-3 overall, winning the program’s first Southland Conference championship and advancing to the Football Championship Subdivision quarterfinals in its first-ever playoff appearance. The Lions return 14 starters from last season’s team, including Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Year Bryan Bennett and All-American kick returner Xavier Roberson to lead the offense, as well as All-Southland defenders Harlan Miller, Isiah Corbett, Jacob Newman, Tyler Stoddary, Justin Church and Marice Sutton. A wealth of talent returning did not deter Roberts and his staff from hitting the recruiting trail aggressively. “We were fortunate to be able to meet most of our pressing needs with our mid-year additions,” Roberts commented. “We had a large group of seniors in the secondary last year and we addressed those needs by bringing in five young men who all can have an immediate impact for us in the defensive backfield. (Mid-year additions) Byron Smith and Aaron Reed can help us replace Gasten Gabriel at left tackle. “We wanted to add quarterback depth and were able to do that by bringing in D’Shaie Landor,” Roberts added. “We felt as if we answered our main questions in December and January, but today we were able to add some quality young men to lead us into the future of our program.” Southeastern added two junior college products on Wednesday in defensive lineman Ashton Henderson from Iowa Western Community College and wide receiver Da’Quan Smith of Hartdell College. The remainder of the 18 additions is made up of high school products with 15 of the additions coming from Louisiana. Southeastern ventured to Texas to add offensive lineman Myles Becnel (League City), wide receiver Jeremiah Rose (Port Neches) and quarterback Kiley Huddleston (Katy). “We’re fortunate to have such a fertile recruiting ground in our backyard,” Roberts said. “We are able to find young men in our immediate area that will help us compete for a national championship.” The Lions added five offensive linemen, four wide receivers, three defensive backs, three linebackers, two running backs, two quarterbacks and a defensive lineman on Wednesday. Five of the newest Lions won’t be far from home after joining the Lion program out of Tangipahoa Parish high schools. That group includes running back Jeremy Smith (Hammond), running back Shannon Cage (Independence), wide receiver Jake Ingraffia (Loranger), offensive lineman Shaquille McClain (Independence) and linebacker Dylan Vaughn (Loranger). Rounding out the Lion in-state additions on Wednesday were defensive back Andrew Breeland (Covington), linebacker Sean Clavelle (New Orleans), defensive back Aaron Craig (Slidell), offensive lineman Conner Gerage (Watson), offensive lineman Walter Ladner III (Slidell), quarterback Tyler Lockhart (Walker), linebacker Jahmal Macklin (Jonesville), defensive back Anthony Milton (New Orleans), wide receiver Joseph Pack (Slidell) and offensive lineman Peyton Winbush (New Orleans). The Lions will open spring practice on March 11, with the Annual Spring Game set for April 5 at 1 p.m. The 2014 schedule will be finalized and announced in the coming weeks. 2014 Southeastern Louisiana Football Additions Jordan Batiste – DB – 5-8 – 169 – Gramercy, La.
