In case you missed it, below is my statement on Israeli action in Gaza: Yesterday, after 10 days of fighting, Israel sent ground forces into Gaza to destroy the terrorist smuggling tunnels connecting the strip to Egypt and Israel. These smuggling tunnels pose a grave threat to Israel, and I fully support Israels right to defend her innocent civilians from terrorist attacks. This conflict reminds us that Hamas is not interested in a quick and peaceful end to the fighting, as evidenced by the groups refusal to accept a ceasefire proposed by Egypt and its launching of several rockets during a United Nations brokered humanitarian ceasefire, both of which Israel had accepted unconditionally. The U.N. even discovered that Hamas has been hiding missiles in U.N. schools. Indeed, as Prime Minister Netanyahu so aptly observed, We’re using missile defense to protect our civilians, and they’re using their civilians to protect their missiles. While I hope that this fighting can swiftly be brought to an end, I fully support Israels actions to ensure quiet on its border and the longterm safety and security of its people.
