In case you missed it, below is my statement on the need to increase sanctions on Iran and the concerns I have regarding todays announcement of another open-ended extension of the nuclear talks: There should be no more delay in ratcheting up economic pressure on Iran and enacting the bipartisan Kirk-Menendez sanctions legislation. The Administration has spent a year asking Congress for patience, but the plain reality is that the Iran nuclear talks have gone in the wrong direction on the core issues. Crippling sanctions are what brought Iran to the table and its time that we act to restore that position of negotiating strength, instead of undermining it by giving the Iranian regime yet another open-ended extension of talks that serves to normalize sanctions relief and affords Iran more time to stall and develop its nuclear program. A nuclear Iran is the greatest threat to our national security, and Congress must urgently step forward to defend and strengthen the sanctions architecture it has put in place.
