In case you were wondering about the efficacy of elbow strikes and why I teach them so heavily in our self-defense program, may I present this video. Nathan Corbett has turned elbow knockouts into an artform. Notice his variations, downward chopping elbows, parallel to the floor elbows, upward elbows, inward elbows, and downward dropping elbows. These are short range, limited momentum strikes thrown at men who are physiologically as prepared as they are going to get to receive damage, and he destroys them. There is something to be said for timing an elbow strike for when an opponent steps forward (i.e. creating a collision) but in self-defense terms, were always planning on our attacker closing the distance. In summation, I love elbow strikes. What combinations can you pick out from this video that we do in class lately? Keep an eye out for shovel punches, especially shovel to hook, as well as jab to rear elbow, and jab, cross, to rear round kick to the legs. Corbett also does an excellent job of timing the step of his lead knee to close the distance and crush upward into a hunched over opponent. Bushido students, especially orange belts, notice how he controls his opponents hands with one glove while throwing an elbow with the other arm.
