In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past few years, increased meal frequency throughout the day DOES NOT increase your metabolism NOR does it make you burn fat or build muscle any quicker than the alternative. ‘Stoking the metabolic fire’ by eating smaller meals more frequently throughout the day is a bunch of crap, despite what your average bro will tell you. The thermic effect of food is directly proportionate to the amount of calories you consume each meal. This means you could consume 10 x 250 calories meals throughout the day or 1 x 2500 calorie meal in your day & still burn the same amount of calories breaking it down. Yes there is an optimal approach to meal frequency when you consider athletic performance & muscle protein synthesis (see my previous post). However, the first rule of meal frequency is that hitting your daily macros is more important. The second rule is exactly the same. Long term dietary success ultimately depends on a maintainable approach to your nutrition. Don’t be a muppet & pack 14 meals for your day because you think you’re going to get shredded quicker that way - make your diet work for you & eat when you feel like it. Plan for longevity.
