In celebration of a great end to my swim season, I enjoyed three great releases from 2013 in and out of theaters. Not in the mood to write extensive reviews, but I can still express my thoughts at least. The Place Beyond The Pines (2013) 8.5/10 Somehow I never expected to get so many chills from this movie, but the title of the movie brings to mind the chills of being in a forest. This is a really good thriller film, about the lengths some men will go to support their families and hold on to what they love. The story is really intriguing and unexpectedly leaves you attached to both the main characters. It isnt afraid to get brutal and director Cianfrance does a effective job building suspense. Bradley Cooper does a wonderful job as Avery Cross, as does Ryan Gosling as Luke; however I feel as though Lukes screen-time is cut a little too short. Other than that its a really interesting story of passion and tragedy. American Hustle (2013) 9/10 Four massive names in Hollywood today give four hilarious and very effective performances in a disco-era story about political corruption and dismembered relationships. In the tradition of comedies like My Cousin Vinny, we are given a situation that seems like a big joke, but can be very real. Giving us laughs and tension is a smartly written script backed up with the witty performances of Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. Director David O. Russel is on his way to being one of the greatest comedy-drama directors of this generation. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) 9/10 Yes this is still playing at my theater three months since November. Anyway, the second film installment in The Hunger Games trilogy is a really exciting follow-up to the 2012 tale of survival in a dystopian society controlled by consumerism. Without dragging the film on with slow action scenes and subplots, director Francis Lawrence gives us a superior sequel. Catching Fire builds on the conflict of the first film and by showing all the corrupt things the game-makes are willing to do to the members of the district gives us a very emotional tale with further character development in Katniss and Peeta. Over the years, Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson have both matured rapidly and continue to do a wonderful job as the films two protagonists. Adding to the majesty of the film are some really beautiful sets ranging in tone from beautiful to somber, as well as the gorgeous costume design and visual efffects and heart-pounding suspense. Now Im the Divergent movie follows this movies footsteps and lets The Mortal Instruments footsteps fade in the wind.
