In celebration of the current exhibitions at the MacLaren Art Centre we will be highlighting the artists whose work is being displayed. This week’s artist is Canadian artist, writer, and sculptor, Sorel Etrog (1933-2014). Etrog was born in Romania and later immigrated to Israel where he studied at the Institute of Painting and Sculpture in Tel Aviv. He later received a scholarship to study at the Brooklyn Museum of Art in New York City and went on to have solo exhibitions in Canada. He created the sculpture Flight for the Canadian pavilion at Expo 67 and represented Canada at the 1966 Venice Biennale. Etrog received several honours for his work including Member of the Order of Canada and member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. You can see Sorel Etrog’s work on display at the MacLaren from July 10, 2014 to November 2, 2014 in the exhibition “ETROG / MOORE”. tinyurl/pffd53u.
