In cockfighting, the rooster begins with a drive, a determination - TopicsExpress

In cockfighting, the rooster begins with a drive, a determination and a remarkable courage, but as the bird suffers cuts to his chest and lungs, the breathing becomes labored, he starts gurgling, from strangling on his own blood, his movements become slower, and his reflexes eventually disappear. Sometimes their eyes, and ears, are pecked to blindness or hearing loss. He eventually becomes more interested in living. He may cower in submission, or try to run, or hide, but he was placed in an inescapable pit, with nothing to hide behind, or under. As the other bird continues his attack, the losing bird will be picked up by handlers, numbers counted, then they will be placed in front of one another, again, lunging them together, to tease and agitate, restarting the fight. When the bird can not stand, handlers may pick him up and try to blow, or suck, the blood out of his lungs, by putting their mouths on the beak (sort of like resuscitating), then they will count and put him back down to extend the fight. Eventually, the time comes to establish a loser, and even if he is still breathing, the loser will be thrown away like trash, in a barrel, or in a pile on the ground. Sometimes the winners are sewn up with no pain medication,, by rooster doctors, and sometimes their injuries are critical and they die. If this is a heritage worth protecting, then we remain a barbaric, uncivilized bunch of heathens, obtaining pleasure and profit from barbarity and pain, values most people say they do not support. If this is the kind of heritage our state wants to be known for, that is scary. We are all tainted by this, children are being trained for this, and to continue this during the next generations,, it can not be ignored any longer.
