In collaboration with Western Environmental Law Center and other groups, we filed suit this week against the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for its failures to protect critical Canada lynx habitat as required under the Endangered Species Act. Despite some new protections for lynx in the lower 48 states, the USFWS has deeply undermined lynx recovery by excluding important sections of their range from critical habitat designation, notably the Kettle River Mountains in northeast Washington. Before they were decimated by trapping, the Kettle Range was home to Washingtons largest lynx population. Though only a small number remain there today, the Kettles are integral to lynx recovery because they serve as the crucial link between more robust lynx populations in the Rocky Mountains and the North Cascades. Were going to court to ensure that this important piece of lynx territory receives the critical habitat designation needed for these iconic native wildcats to recover in the Pacific Northwest!
