In-depth story on a group of Kurdish all female fighters, led by a Syrian feminist, who fought and took over a village from ISIS, while the Australian newscaster is there doing a story on them, ISIS attacks. Incredibly brave women, a chance to really get to know them, and they all seem remarkably well grounded, although clearly not very well armed. Historically speaking this is the stomping grounds of the Amazons, so female fighters are nothing new in this region. Interestingly enough, many of the Persian uprisings against the Arab Islamic invasion involved famous and legendary women fighters as well, from Apranik in the first invasion, to Banu Khorramdin, wife of Babak Khoramdeen who led guerrilla attacks against the ruling Caliphate, both are revered till this date as national heroes, despite the fact that the Mullah$ have banned any observance of them. You may have noticed that many Persians defiantly continue to name their children Babak/Baback despite the brutal ruling theocracys bans. YPG is the freedom movement for Turkish Kurds, they have been termed terrorist by the international community, mostly under pressure from Turkey which has tried for decades to force them to give up their Kurdish language and cultural identity, btw. Theyre seeking independence and nationhood additionally, which has become the hot potato in the middle of this middle eastern mess. Linguistically and culturally they are part of what is termed an Iranian group, so they dont quite fit into the Turkish or Arab cultures for that reason, their language and culture are completely different and distinct from the nations they are spread between. The west and the world may have to reconsider the terrorist designation re: the YPG at some point. But for the time being, this is one of the most dedicated and well organized groups fighting ISIS on the ground!
