In discussions about Israel, people always leave out the topography of the West Bank when they blithely say give it up for peace. Israels narroest point is only 9 km across - at the belly of the West Bank. The West Bank is a series of foothills that rise up sharply from the coastal plain of Israel - the area of highest population concentration in Israel. These foothills are dense and steep. If the Palestinians or infiltrating Hamas were able to take control of certain hilltops, it would be easy to launch deadly strikes on key population centres of Israel. Remember that the West Bank used to be Jordanian - and Jordan only gave up this land to the PEACE PROCESS - (not to either side) on condition it not be used as a staging ground for terror. If Hamas succeed in formenting similar attacks on Israel from this point, I suspect whatever principles started Oslo could be declared null and void and the Palestinians, again, would be further stateless and with no recourse this time. Thats my opinion. An informed commentary by Khaled Abu Toameh: gatestoneinstitute.org/4676/hamas-west-bank
