In discussions about the legitimate role of government I have one main goal: I want people to see the gun in the room. We can say the state is violent and this is absolutely true. Those who believe the state is legitimate and that the violence is justified (which is a lot of people from various parties) can reply Sure its violent Bruce and here are examples XYZ where that violence is moral and warranted and why. Thats an honest conversation with merit -- its a debate republicans or dems or anarchists can have. But to deny the violence exists entirely isnt productive. If people thought of it in these terms then wed have a lot less things like the drug war. If well-meaning do gooders realized that uttering the words there ought to be a law or more people realized that asking for government help with various issues always is ultimately backed by guns, violence, cages, nightsticks and boots stomping on heads then perhaps theyd pause before uttering those words and wed have a better world.
