In early 1961, both the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association held their respective awards ceremonies to recognize the best in film from 1960. At the 18th Golden Globe Awards Ceremony (held on March 16th, 1961), three awards were handed out for best film -- one for best drama, one for best comedy, and one for best musical. There were five nominees for Best Film-Drama for 1960: Elmer Gantry Inherit the Wind Sons and Lovers “Spartacus” Sunrise at Campobello The Golden Globe went to Spartacus. There were five nominees for Best Film-Comedy for 1960: The Apartment The Facts of Life The Grass Is Greener It Started in Naples Our Man in Havana The Golden Globe went to The Apartment. There were five nominees for Best Film-Musical for 1960: Bells Are Ringing Can-Can Lets Make Love Pepe Song Without End The Golden Globe went to Song Without End. (However, as I am not a fan of musicals, I am not currently including films from this category in my lists [unless they are also nominated elsewhere].) At that same ceremony, there were five nominees for Best Director for 1960: Richard Brooks for Elmer Gantry Jack Cardiff for Sons and Lovers Stanley Kubrick for Spartacus Billy Wilder for The Apartment Fred Zinnemann for The Sundowners The Golden Globe went to Jack Cardiff for Sons and Lovers. At the 33rd Academy Awards Ceremony (held on April 17th, 1961), there were five nominees for Best Picture of 1960: The Alamo The Apartment Elmer Gantry “Sons and Lovers The Sundowners The Oscar went to The Apartment. At that same ceremony, there were five nominees for Best Director for 1960: Jack Cardiff for Sons and Lovers Jules Dassin for Never on Sunday Alfred Hitchcock for Psycho Billy Wilder for The Apartment Fred Zinnemann for The Sundowners The Oscar went to Billy Wilder for The Apartment. Adding these 30 films together, eliminating those nominated only for a Golden Globe for Best Film-Musical, and then removing any other duplicates leaves 14 movies on my list for 1960: The Alamo The Apartment Elmer Gantry The Facts of Life The Grass is Greener Inherit the Wind It Started in Naples Never on Sunday Our Man in Havana Psycho Sons and Lovers Spartacus The Sundowners Sunrise at Campobello Several years ago I saw Psycho and since starting this project, I have also watched The Apartment, Inherit the Wind, and Spartacus -- so just 10 more films to go!
