In early 2007, a Luhya friend visited my worplace in Kasarani with a burly man. Introductions began: this is Joseph Olita, who acted in The Rise and Fall of Iddi Amin. I went, wow!. Then what transpired next made my heart sank. He was living in the darker sides of Kasarani and wanted my organization to engage him to teach acting to our kids. I said I would consult my director and get back. I did but director said we couldnt afford his stated 300/day!! In my mind, I kept asking what one of the most celebrated actors could have done to go broke in 20 years. And its still a question that lingers: what can we do to ensure artistes, thespians and musicians live decent lives in their older lives? As we celebrate Joseph Olita, lets buy ORIGINAL to support them. RIP Olita and pole to Wakhu and your other very close friends.
